Is “premium” on the way out?

With the announcement from Brian Gardner that he will be offering his Revolution Themes free to the public as of 31 October. The WordPress community has gone into a bit of a flat spin. There have been quite mixed reactions from people, but many are asking the question…”what has really prompted this move?”. I think it will be great for the community as a whole, but I also think that it might be a little bit premature, as there is obviously still quite a high demand for these “premium” themes.

Nevertheless, there is still money to be made, and Brian has indicated that he will be offering support and design services for these “free” themes. I think the next couple of months are going to be extremely interesting and will definitely set a precedent for those who are looking to get into the WordPress design game.

Anyway, I would love to hear some opinions on this…so feel free to leave a comment :)

  1. do you know your blog is listed on this blackhat site? blackhatbootcamp.net/listofwordpressblogs/

  2. @James: No, I wasn’t aware of that. Please could you keep comments relevant to the post topic. Thanks :)

  3. I think moving to service model is where alot of software vendors are going and have already gone. More and more information wants to be free and the way to add value is to provide services like support (as well as others). There was a pretty good discussion about adding value to open source at a FLOSS podcast http://twit.tv/floss39 (I think this was the one). Good discussion about open source in general.
