I think moving to service model is where alot of software vendors are going and have already gone. More and more information wants to be free and the way to add value is to provide services like support (as well as others). There was a pretty good discussion about adding value to open source at a FLOSS podcast http://twit.tv/floss39 (I think this was the one). Good discussion about open source in general.
